Britain’s love affair with pies

2nd Mar 2012 - 00:00
Abstract
Research by Jus-Rol has found that Britain’s love affair with pies is going from strength to strength and offers real sales potential for pubs.
Below are some interesting facts and figures: Some 24% of research respondents said steak & kidney is their favourite filling followed by chicken & mushroom (19%). Some 47% of respondents would choose a celebrity chef to cook a perfect pie, 20% of men thought their partner would attain pie perfection while 17% of women chose their mum. On average, people in the UK eat two pies a month, with 17% of men eating four. People aged 45-54 are more likely to eat more pies (four a month) than any other age group. It also shows that the UK pie eating capitals are Edinburgh and Newcastle. Asked to nominate their ideal pastry combination, 26% plumped for a puff pastry lid while 22% chose a short-crust pastry bottom with a puff pastry lid. When asked how much they would pay for a perfect pub pie, on average, respondents quoted a figure of £5 but 6% said they would go as high as £8-£10.
