Winning schools at Buckingham Palace to cook for the queen

Thirty two children from the four winning schools are going to Buckingham Palace today to help prepare their recipes and serve them at a special reception attended by The Queen.
They have won through to the final round of a competition organised by the Duchess of Cornwall called Cook for The Queen, which invited schools throughout the country to create a special menu. Guests will include 40 drawn from organisations supporting Love British Food 2012, the campaign that organised the competition on behalf of The Duchess, as well as leading figures from the food world including Jamie Oliver, Rick Stein and Prue Leith. Across the road from Buckingham Palace, The Goring Hotel is serving a different canapé from the winning menus each day as part of its evening bar menu. 'Cook for The Queen' is the idea of The Duchess of Cornwall and is her special tribute to The Queen for the Diamond Jubilee. As part of this year's Love British Food 2012 campaign that is being run by British Food Fortnight, the national celebration of food that The Duchess supports, schools across the country were invited to create a special menu for The Queen that celebrates the food produced in their part of the country. Pupils from the winning schools - Cape Cornwall School near Penzance, Latimer Arts College near Kettering, St Columba's Primary School from Oban in Scotland and Eastington Primary School from Gloucestershire – were due to arrive at the Grand Entrance of Buckingham Palace in the early afternoon to help prepare their dishes for Her Majesty. The children will then go to the royal kitchens to meet Mark Flanagan, the royal chef, who has chosen a selection of dishes from their winning menus to turn into special canapés to serve at the reception. Two children from each school will then work in the kitchens under the supervision of Flanagan and his team to help prepare the canapés. The other children will help prepare the reception and will be given a lesson by the deputy sergeant footman on how to serve food at a royal reception. The Duchess of Cornwall will visit the kitchens ahead of the reception to see the children put the finishing touches to the food. The Queen will meet all the children and their teachers and will be shown the winning menus and the work that each school did to create them.
