On 9 April 2026, Staff Sergeant Daniel Butler was named Armed Forces Caterer of the Year at the Public Sector Catering Awards, in recognition of his exceptional leadership, innovation and contribution to military catering across the British Army.
Deployed to Belize, he identified a critical gap in the exercising framework and authored a comprehensive guide that has since been formally incorporated into Standing Operating Instructions. This now shapes the preparation and performance of all future Master Chefs deploying to British Army Training Support Unit Belize.
His ability to modernise operational catering was noted on Exercise Cypher Strike, where he redesigned the entire feeding system. By creating a more coherent, resilient and efficient delivery model, he significantly elevated food quality and presentation, introducing service standards ‘never seen before’ according to feedback.
He also helped in community engagement in Jaywick, Essex by providing his chefs with a development opportunity while delivering meaningful support to a deprived community at the same time.
In nominating SSgt Butler, his superiors said: “These achievements demonstrate a forward-thinking chef whose creativity consistently enhances capability, improves standards and delivers lasting benefit across defence catering.
“He embodies inspirational and dependable leadership. Operating two ranks above his own, he has been a cornerstone of catering delivery across 16 Air Assault Brigade.”
SSgt Butler’s work has been formally recognised through a 1 Div GOC Commendation, which recognises outstanding merit, dedication, and service beyond the normal demands of duty.
He has also led the catering RLS on major brigade and multinational exercises - including Exercises Ramseys Sustain, Sabre Junction, Pegasus Yanke, and Cypher Strike - with ‘calm authority, meticulous planning and exceptional command oversight’.
In addition, SSgt Butler has secured advanced culinary training for subordinates, delivered brigade-wide live cookery demonstrations, and created Exercise Butchers Buck, an innovative ‘field-to-fork’ training package integrating deer stalking, butchery and advanced field cooking techniques.
He has also been credited with ‘strengthening morale and cohesion’ by leading regimental events including Families Day, the Regimental Darts Competition, and Christmas team-building activities.
In addition to high profile events, his influence on food quality extends across the brigade, ranging from executing a street food buffet for boxing night, to delivering high-end cuisine at the AGC Pegasus Cup, WO’s Summer Ball, wine tasting evenings, and dual mess dining nights.
His nomination notes: “SSgt Butler’s output has repeatedly elevated standards and significantly enhanced the dining experience for soldiers. Through meticulous execution, culinary mastery and consistent excellence, he has raised food quality across every environment - camp, ceremonial and field - marking him as one of the Army’s most capable and versatile chefs.
“His leadership was central to his team winning 1 (UK) Division Team of the Year, strengthening diplomatic ties in Belize, delivering inter-operability with US forces and protecting the UK’s authority to train overseas. Across all tasks, his leadership is consistent, inspirational and deeply impactful.”
