Abstract
The Hospitality Department at Exeter College has grown into a genuine hub of excellence for the South West. Their work is driven by a simple belief that students thrive when they are surrounded by opportunity, supported by experts and challenged to aim high.

Over the coming weeks, Public Sector Catering will be revisiting the remarkable stories behind the winners of the 2026 Public Sector Catering Awards.

There are over 289 learners across Levels 1–4 and two cohorts of Michael Caines Academy students. Employers trust Exeter College, schools look to them for inspiration, and the alumni demonstrate what is possible when learners are nurtured, stretched, and encouraged to explore the full breadth of the hospitality world.

The industry partnerships are one of Exeter College’s greatest strengths. They give learners access to experiences that shape their confidence, skills, and career aspirations. Students take part in outstanding work placements, hands on masterclasses, and enrichment activities that bring the sector to life.

Many previous students have progressed to prestigious establishments such as Boringdon Hall, Lympstone Manor, Osip, and The Masons Arms. Others have reached global icons including Eleven Madison Park, Claridge’s, Petrus, Adare Manor, and Dinner by Heston.

Some alumni have taken their skills into the military, public sector catering, ski seasons, private dining, events, and even entrepreneurial ventures overseas. This diversity reflects their commitment to showcasing the entire sector—not just the traditional routes.

Every programme includes a rich and varied enrichment offer. Students take part in trips, visits, demonstrations, and workshops that deepen their understanding of the industry. Exeter College brings in external speakers to address topics that matter to young people entering hospitality today.

Competitions are a cornerstone of the culture. Exeter College believe every learner should have the chance to compete, regardless of age or ability. They host the South West Chef of the Year finals, the Ray Kenny Bursary Competition and regional heats for Seafood Chef of the Year, Young Risotto Chef, and FutureChef.

Exeter College says their track record is exceptional, with recent wins including National Seafood Chef of the Year (two consecutive years), Young Risotto Chef of the Year, multiple Salon Culinaire medals, and a place in the Zest Quest Asia final.

The faculty of 16 full time lecturers brings an extraordinary range of experience. Among them are former footmen to HRH Queen Elizabeth II, chefs from Michelin starred restaurants, patisserie specialists, cruise ship professionals, hotel owners, and leaders of major catering operations.

The multi award winning @34 Restaurant is the crown jewel of the faculty. Open Monday to Friday, it includes the Vinery coffee shop and bakery from 10am, daily lunch service from 12:00–14:00, and evening services throughout the week.

Every student cooks and serves in @34, regardless of their qualification. Exeter College believe that working with real customers, real expectations, and real feedback is essential to their development. Each service is carefully differentiated to ensure learners at every level can succeed and grow.
