PKL finds valuable skills after investing in an apprentice

14th Mar 2012 - 00:00
Abstract
Gloucestershire based PKL Group is celebrating the success of their apprentice this week.
Chris Large joined the company three years ago after completing his A Levels and is working to a five year training programme with them. As he explains: "When I left sixth form I knew I wanted to learn a trade but as the recession had just hit there weren't many apprenticeships around. I sent a letter to PKL on the off chance they had any opportunities and was invited for an interview. "After that I started working a couple of days a week to learn as much as I could about the company and was thrilled when I was later offered a full apprenticeship." The company, which has over 900 portable kitchen units for hire, relies on staff like Chris to keep them all in top condition ready for customers. Since starting Chris has worked across a wide range of projects, including the Singapore Youth Olympics and the Asian Games in Muscat, Oman. "It's amazing being able to go abroad with such a respected company and learn on the job. Being an engineer in those situations can be demanding and I learnt a lot working those big events. So far I've completed a three year plumbing course and I'm currently working towards my gas qualifications. Having the chance to work towards recognised qualifications like these means I can become an all round engineer for the company." Lee Vines, sales and marketing director, said he's thrilled with the progress that Chris has shown: "By investing in someone like Chris from the beginning of their career we can maintain the high standards we set for all our employees and grow the PKL team from the inside out. We're delighted with his progress so far and are pleased he's enjoying his time with us. He's become a valuable member of the PKL family and we hope he will stay with us."
