Abstract
Meals provider Apetito has launched the first reduced carbon menu into the NHS, designed to enable hospital caterers to reduce their emissions associated with mealtimes.

The company is proud to have achieved a reduction in carbon of close to 20% across a range of its NHS menus. The reduced carbon menus have been achieved ‘without compromise to quality, cost or nutrition’ by prioritising white meats, fish and vegan options.

Lee Sheppard, director of corporate affairs and policy at Apetito, said: “We are committed to supporting our partners and the NHS to deliver net zero carbon targets, whilst delivering an appealing and nutritious menu to patients.

“We are extremely proud to be at the forefront of delivering reduced carbon menus to the NHS and will continue innovating to help address the climate crisis.

“As the first meals provider that is taking reduced carbon footprint menus to the NHS, we’re excited to have launched this ground-breaking initiative whilst still delivering great quality meals and without compromising nutrition or price.”

First to adopt one of Apetito’s new menus is St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The new menu will help save an estimated 23 tonnes of kgCO2e every year, which has the equivalent carbon saving to over 34 return flights from London to New York.

The reduced carbon menu is expected to be adopted by other healthcare trusts who are aiming to meet their on net zero commitments.
