Abstract
Supplier of prepared meals to the healthcare sector Apetito has extended its range of texture modified meals and launched a new range of IDDSI level 5 desserts to celebrate Dementia Action Week (16-22 May).

The desserts aim to give hospital caterers more choice to support patients who are living with dysphagia, a swallowing condition often associated with dementia that results in patients requiring softer foods. The new level 5 desserts are based on traditional favourites including rice pudding, apple sponge and sticky toffee pudding.

The desserts have been developed with both taste and nutritional content at front of mind. Each of the new dishes are gluten free, and the sticky toffee sponge has also been created to cater for those at risk of malnutrition, providing an energy dense option.

Mandy Chambers, general manager of Apetito healthcare division, said: “A strong focus for our business is looking at the future of dementia-friendly dining, which is something that our healthcare customers take very seriously. We continue to work in close collaboration with our customers to understand their needs and their challenges and are proud to have developed this delicious new range of safe and nutritionally balanced desserts that we know their patients will enjoy.”
