Asda’s winter fruit & veg pledge returns to fight food poverty
Abstract
Asda is bringing back its Winter Fruit and Veg pledge and will once again donate the equivalent of one million meals at the start of this year, as part of its partnership with FareShare and the Coronation Food Project.

The supermarket’s pledge will see over 420 tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables donated to the food redistribution charity over the next 12 weeks. The return of the donation will ensure FareShare’s nationwide network of over 8,000 charities and community groups are well-supported.

These groups include afterschool and breakfast clubs, homelessness shelters, and older people’s lunch clubs, all working to provide essential support services alongside meals and food support.

A variety of fruit and vegetables will be donated including  grapes, citrus, apples, tomatoes, lettuce, sweet potatoes, onions, potatoes, butternut squash, ginger, chillies, parsnips, sprouts.

Kris Gibbon-Walsh, deputy chief executive of FareShare and The Felix Project, said: “We are enormously grateful to everyone at Asda for their ongoing support. Ensuring people and communities have access to a good supply of fruit and vegetables is a big part of our mission. Charities receiving food from FareShare tell us they appreciate the variety of fruit and veg we provide.

“Across our network of over 8,000 local charities, fresh produce features in nourishing meals for older people struggling with loneliness, alongside hot dinners for people experiencing homelessness and as nutritious snacks for children in out of school clubs. Produce distributed through the Winter Fruit & Veg Pledge will go a long way to helping people and communities across the UK access healthy, nutritious food. Thank you.”
