Abstract
Independent caterer Bartlett Mitchell has reduced its carbon emissions by 22.3 tonnes in its second year of carbon footprint reporting with The Planet Mark.

In total the carbon footprint in year ending December 2019 was 99.8 tonnes of CO2- a decrease of 19.1% from the previous year. Bartlett Mitchell committed to The Planet Mark accreditation in 2018 to help tackle climate change.

The Planet Mark is a sustainable certification that encourages action and builds an ‘empowered community’ of like-minded individuals. Certification to the programme is retained if organisations make a reduction of 2.5% or more in carbon emissions every year.

Steve Malkin, chief executive of The Planet Mark, said: “The team at Bartlett Mitchell live and breathe sustainability. We are thrilled to see them achieve their second year’s certification to The Planet Mark and in doing so, make such a significant carbon reduction.

“In certifying with The Planet Mark, Bartlett Mitchell is helping make healthy and sustainable diets affordable and accessible for everyone, while nurturing the planet at the same time. This is wonderful work from a really committed team of people.”

The emission reduction by Bartlett Mitchell is equivalent to an average family vehicle driving more than twice around the circumference of the earth.

Bartlett Mitchell achieved the 19.1% carbon reduction by encouraging workers to switch to public transport and hosting virtual meetings (pre-Covid).

Ian Thomas, chief executive of Bartlett Mitchell, added: “We are delighted with this achievement. While the results are taken from the pre-Covid lockdown period, we are already looking at how, in the new world we are living in, we can continue to make positive changes and reduce our impact on the environment.”
