Abstract
Bath Spa University and its Students’ Union have joined forces to declare a ‘climate emergency’ to encourage staff and students to pledge their support for action.

Two of Bath Spa University’s catering outlets hold the Soil Association’s silver Food for Life Award highlighting its commitment to using sustainable and ethical sourced food.

Last year the university reduced its reliance on single-use plastics and all their electricity has come from renewable sources since 2016.

To date, the university has reduced its carbon emissions by over 50% per metres squared and increased their recycling rates to 80%.

Sue Rigby, vice-chancellor professor at Bath Spa University, said: “By declaring an emergency we have something of a voice in the wider community and nationally to emphasise the fact that we want the Government to take this very seriously.”

The online pledge calls for action to tackle climate change across the UK. Bath Spa University has set a target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.
