Abstract
New research, conducted by Pro Carton who polled 1,000 UK adults on their takeaway recycling habits, found one in five people (19%) admit they never bother recycling the packaging from takeaways.

The average fast-food fan in Britain throws away 81 plastic Chinese and Indian containers, 24 pizza boxes, 19 fish & chip wrappers and 64 bottles of drink every year.

Over a quarter of those surveyed (26%) said the reason for this was they are unsure what is and what is not recyclable. A further 11% said the point of ordering a takeaway was to save time cleaning up afterwards.

Tony Hitchin, general manager of Pro Carton, said: “With takeaways on the rise due to local and national lockdowns in 2020, this research provides food for thought for brands looking to reduce the environmental impact of the packaging they choose.

“More and more takeaway containers are now being made out of cartonboard, from French fries, scoops and burger trays to noodle bowls and fish & chip boxes so more takeaway packaging can, and should, be recycled than ever before.”

The survey also revealed that Sheffield is the ‘takeaway capital’ of the UK where the average adult eats 50 takeaways a year.
