Cardiff barista to compete in UK Championships

4th Feb 2009 - 00:00
Abstract
Trevor Hyam from The Plan Café in Cardiff has made it through to the semi final of the UK Barista Championships after winning the West of England and South Wales heat by impressing judges with his skill and sheer determination.
If Hyam comes up trumps and wins through to the semi finals and finals at ScotHot in Glasgow next month, he will go on to represent the UK in the World Championship event which takes place in Atlanta, USA in April. Speaking at the event, the champion said: "I am absolutely delighted to have won this competition, especially as this is the first time I have entered. I put my success down to the quality of the coffee I used, which I sourced from a well respected coffee roaster in this area, Peter James from James Gourmet Coffee in Ross on Wye. All I have done is to unlock the potential of what is a fantastic coffee blend. After a few weeks of hard work organising everything and practicing my set into the evenings it all paid off on the day!" Andrew Tucker, managing director for SanRemo, the UKBC espresso machine sponsor, continued: "Trevor appreciates how important the quality of the ingredients are. He developed a relatively simple recipe for his signature drink but used premium quality ingredients and his barista expertise to really bring the flavours alive." During a UKBC heat, each competitor has 15 minutes to make four cappuccinos, four espressos and four of their own 'signature' drinks. As well as the flavour and texture of the drinks, the baristi are judged on presentation, professionalism, attention to detail and knowledge of their chosen coffee's provenance.
