Abstract
Pupils at Heage Primary School are being encouraged to grow and eat healthy food and work as part of the authority's £510,000 'Growing Better Together' project.
Schools and children's centres across Derbyshire have been given funding, with grants of up to a maximum of £10,000 available.
Heage Primary School, in School Lane, received £8,145 last year to develop a fruit and vegetable growing area in the school grounds. Staff are supporting pupils in planning, planting and growing of fresh produce to help raise the children's awareness of healthy lifestyles.
Bruce Buckley, Derbyshire County Council's strategic director for children's services, said: "This is a fabulous and innovative way of getting youngsters working and learning outdoors alongside parents and older members of their community to grow and find out more about healthy food.
The county council's cash is boosting outdoor learning activities countywide during the school day and in children's leisure time to give them chance to plan, plant, grow and eat healthy food and share experience and knowledge by working alongside older people.
The project will end in July.
