Abstract
New data reveals that the average female chef gets paid 14% less than her male counterpart – despite the “need to retain and promote women in the sector during the continued recruitment crisis.”
Of the hospitality staff registered with recruitment agency The Change Group in 2017, women chefs earn on average £3,598 less than male chefs, while female front-of-house staff earn 9% - £2,738 – less.
Founder and director of The Change Group, Craig Allen, said: “There is progress being made in terms of gender equality in hospitality. The data shows that there is more work to be done in order to ensure women are rewarded equally to men for doing the same job.
“Attracting and retaining talent continues to be a major priority for the hospitality industry. It’s time to recognise that women can play a part in helping us to address the talent gap. Rewarding women properly is key to attracting and keeping them in the industry.”
