Kick-off the weekend with a little trivia, courtesy of this week's round-up of Fun Friday Food Facts!
- Most tea in the world comes from China, India, Sri Lanka and Kenya, but there is a small tea plantation in Cornwall that produces genuine English-grown tea
- To help prevent food waste, some chefs have started turning stale bread into ice cream (flavours include sourdough with butter molasses and coffee; and frozen peshwari naan and milk). They might not sound nice but word on the street is they are "memorably creamy”
- Sliced bread was once banned in the United States. In 1943, the US banned the production of sliced bread as a wartime cost-cutting measure. Its disappearance from shelves did not bode well with Americans, who were already used to the convenience of pre-sliced loaves. After two months of public ire the ban was lifted, with the New York Times announcing: "Sliced Bread Put Back on Sale; Housewives' Thumbs Safe Again"
- Walkers produces 10m packs of crisps every day and more than 350,000 tonnes of potatoes a year
