Abstract
In the week that is bringing most of us face-to-face with the increasing need to use a face mask as part of Covid-19 control measures, perhaps a little dose of food-related trivia will provide a welcome respite:

* The heatproof sleeve on the outside of a disposable coffee cup is called a ‘zarf ’.

* The drug valium, used for its calming effect, is present in potatoes.

* The white plaster used on the Taj Mahal was made using sugar, fruit juice and egg white along with lime, shells and marble dust.

* It is estimated that ten per cent of chipped teeth are caused by unpopped popcorn kernels.

* Haribo sweets contain nine of the ten amino acids essential to human life.
