Ramsay says he was struck by the extent of child hunger across the UK, with 800,000 children in poverty at risk of going hungry during the school holidays and one in ten households suffering from food insecurity.
Commenting on the partnership, Ramsay said: “I remember vividly what it was like growing up in a household with very little money. It’s painful to reflect on the fact that so many children growing up today are living with that same constant fear of being hungry, particularly in the school holidays.
“Feeding Britain is doing something really special and powerful to help those children, and that’s why I’m delighted to support the charity’s vital work with personal financial support from myself and Tana, as well as raising awareness of childhood food poverty and the incredible network that Feeding Britain supports to help children across the UK.
“We also need to create additional fundraising opportunities to help more families, more children, during school holidays, which is the most difficult time of the year.”
He recently visited a Feeding Britain project in South London, which combines year-round access to affordable food with priority support for children and young people during school holidays.
Professor Greta Defeyter, trustee of Feeding Britain, added: “I am delighted that Gordon is working with Feeding Britain to increase the number of children and young people able to access support during school holidays.
“He fully understands the need for stigma-free meals, both in primary and secondary schools, and also during the school holidays where clubs provide children and young people with meals alongside opportunities to engage in enriching activities.”
