'I wasn't looking forward to my school lunch…'

14th Apr 2009 - 00:00
Abstract
Many parents are aware that the Nutrient Standards are coming into effect and schools are inviting them in to experience a modern-day school lunch. One parent wrote to the Doncaster Free Press describing how initially she wasn't looking forward to her lunch but was pleasantly surprised…
"I would like to express my views on the mythical tale of how bad school meals are. We keep hearing how the quality of food given to our children in school must be improved. Well I can't see how the Pheasant Bank Junior School in Rossington will be able to improve their school meals, quite frankly. I was invited to lunch with my daughter who is a pupil at Pheasant Bank and to be honest, I wasn't much looking forward to it. Yes, I had been "taken in" by the hype and due to this I believed after lunch I would return home suffering some degree of indigestion. In total contrast, I enjoyed the meal very much. I made my choice in haste actually, as there was so much to choose from! There's the sandwich bar, salad bar, hot food bar and the choices on each were unbelievable after reading so many bad reports on the issue. The presentation of the food clearly demonstrated that, staff had pride in their work and the only downside to the afternoon was the little chairs! Joking apart, the school meal experience has come a long, long way and school kitchen staff should invite some local journalists for lunch and regain some of their credibility in catering. Some time has passed since eating my lunch and still no heartburn! Compliments to all the kitchen staff at Pheasant Bank, and I'm looking forward to next year."
