He discussed the model of The Clink Charity, which sees meals cooked and served by prisoners in HMP Bristol, Styal and Risley. Prisoners receive hands-on training and work towards qualifications. The scheme has been successful in reducing the rate of reoffending.
Gauke said he hopes the model of getting prisoners work outside prison will be adopted more widely.
He notes that this could be achieved by expanding and increasing the use of release of prisoners on workplace release on temporary license.
He adds: “This will give more prisoners the chance to prove themselves to an employer, to build relationships and their CV, and to get that real-world experience before they leave prison.”
Gauke hopes a wide-ranging education and employment strategy can propel prisoners into employment when they are released.
