Performance students get lesson in healthy eating courtesy of Sodexo

5th Oct 2010 - 00:00
Abstract
Students at The Hammond dance music and drama school in Cheshire were given expert advice on cooking healthy food, creating recipes and understanding the nutritional requirements for a balanced diet thanks to a recent event sponsored by catering provider Sodexo.
As part of the students induction, Sodexo provided students with recipe cards to give them the chance to replicate the healthy meals at home. The students also received information cards explaining how to select healthy choices based on the nutritional requirements for performers. The students, most of whom are living away from home for the first time, were encouraged to use recipes and information cards in their new homes to ensure they were feeding themselves balanced, healthy meals that would help supply the nutrient requirements for a performer. The recipes demonstrated and explained on the cards included: pork, ginger and orange stir fry; a spinach and chickpea curry; a fruit feast flapjack; fresh fruit salad and a banana and blueberry smoothie. Students were also treated to a two-course lunch as part of the event after seeing the recipes prepared and cooked in a live demonstration. Performance students Laura Gregory and Charlotte Jones also received prizes of a smoothie maker and food steamer after being named the winners of a lucky prize draw also arranged by Sodexo on the day. Sodexo's catering manager at the school, Stella Dennis said it was very important that recipes aimed at students are simple but exciting enough to want to prepare themselves at home. She said: "I've made sure that the menus are based on the nutirtional needs of dancers, by using foods that help them stay fuller for longer, the right kinds of carbohydrates, adaquate protein and ensuring they know the importance of breakfast and hydration." Sodexo provides its "Feedlife" offer at school, which is centred on the association between a customer's nutritional intake and how diet contributes to a healthy lifestyle. It is also designed to meet the rising expectations from pupils by using quality ingredients.
