Abstract
Toad in the hole, fish & chips, rice pudding, the Cornish pasty and tikka masala all made the top 25 British dishes of all time according to new research.

Researchers from insights agency Perspectus Global surveyed the nation asking them to vote for their favourite British dishes and foods.

The top spot was taken by Friday night favourite fish & chips (58%), followed by Sunday favourite roast beef with Yorkshire puddings (42%) and the full English breakfast (40%). Classics such as trifle (10%), ham, egg & chips (14%) and Victoria sponge cake (19%) all made the definitive list, as did steak & kidney pudding (12%) and jam roly-poly (15%).

Overall 68% of those who took part in the survey agreed that classic British dishes are seeing a resurgence. As many as 32% of Gen Z and Millennials said they have been learning how to make low-cost British meals due to the rising cost of living.

Ellie Glason, managing director of Perspectus Global, said: “Our research suggests that we are seeing a definite resurgence in the popularity of classic British foods and recipes. In fact, the data suggests that Millennials and Generation Z’s are perhaps keeping costs down by learning to cook some of the traditional recipes dating back to their grandparents generation, including jam roly-poly, toad in the hole, trifle and Welsh rarebit.”
