South Korea plans to ban dog meat industry
Abstract
South Korea has voted to ban the dog meat industry by making the human consumption of dog meat illegal in the country from 2027, it was reported by Sky News.

The parliament in South Korea passed the bill by 208 votes to zero. By 2027, If anyone is found to be breaking the new law they could face up to three years in prison or a fine up to £18,000.

Since 2015 the Humane Society International (HSI) has permanently closed 18 dog meat farms in South Korea, rescuing over 2,700 dogs and helping the farmers switch to other animal-friendly livelihoods such as growing crops like chilli plants and parsley.

A spokesperson for HSI said: “We’ve worked tirelessly alongside our partners to make this ban happen and are thrilled that this historic day is finally here. Thank you to all of our supporters who’ve stood by our side.”
