Working with Castle Howell Foods, Merthyr Tydfil, Powys and Blaenau Gwent Councils have all switched to a ketchup choice that promises both low salt and low sugar, making school meals even healthier.
Fairyal Pabani, school catering manager and nutritionist, said: “At Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council we are always looking for ways to reduce sugar and salt on our menus while keeping the meals nutritious and tasty for the children.
“We are looking forward to working with Real Good Ketchup to reduce sugar and salt further in every kitchen in our schools, whilst also being able to serve those children with allergies a ketchup they can enjoy too.”
Real Good Ketchup offers a no added ‘free sugars’ and 80% less salt ketchup option. The recommended daily amount of added sugar for a seven to ten year-old is the equivalent of six sugar cubes.
Swapping to Real Good Ketchup is a simple step towards sugar reduction by removing a sugar cube from the plate at mealtimes when ketchup is served. Real Good Ketchup is sustainably produced in the UK, with fully recyclable packaging and is available in 2.7kg catering jars and 310g table top squeezy bottles.
Liz Jones, founder of Real Good Ketchup, added: “We are seeing an increase in the number of councils and school caterers changing menus to reduce sugar and salt and are delighted to work with Castell Howell to offer schools in Wales a healthier option whilst delivering an award winning taste.
“By serving Real Good Ketchup and reducing both salt and sugar for school children at mealtimes on ketchup days, we are able to make a difference. As a team, we have over 20 years’ experience in children’s food and ensure that our production is totally nut free and all ingredients are free from the top 14 listed food allergens."
