Abstract
Premier Foods has launched a new range of McDougalls No Added Sugar Vegan Jelly to meet the growing demand for low sugar school desserts.

According to a new survey from Premier Foods, Four in five children say they like jelly and 65% included it among the desserts they’d like to see more of in schools. The new research includes findings from a poll of 500 UK-based eight to 16-year-olds. The survey discovered:

  • 54% of children say jelly is more exciting when mixed with fresh fruit
  • 24% of children list jelly amongst their top five favourite school desserts
  • 34% of children get excited by the idea of having boba pearls in their jelly (subject to product being school compliant)

From being HFSS compliant and School Food Standards compliant, suitable for vegans and gluten-free to being free from all major allergens, Premier Foods says its new product meets the needs of modern and inclusive school menus.

Each 1.4kg pack produces 17 litres of jelly or 174 x 100ml made up portions which set in just one hour, allowing school kitchens to achieve a higher yield and deliver exciting desserts with minimal preparation time. Available in four classic flavours – strawberry, raspberry, orange and lime – the range offers something for every pupil’s taste.

Louise Wagstaffe, senior culinary advisor at Premier Foods, said: “Jelly is a popular dessert with almost two thirds of children calling for more of it on school menus. Add some fruit, and over half say it becomes even more exciting. The message from pupils is clear, jelly still has a place on the tray, and they’re ready for it to return in a fun, low sugar way.

“Whether served on its own or with fresh fruit, our new range of jelly offers a simple, cost-effective way to add fun and flavour to school desserts, without compromising on nutrition. It offers an exciting opportunity for school caterers to bring jelly back in a healthier, more inclusive way.”

School caterers can visit the Premier Foods stand in Hall 2 (Monarch) Foyer at LACA Main Event (8-9th July) to try the jelly for themselves, pick up recipe inspiration and take home a free sample.
