Abstract
With British Sandwich Week taking place from 12-19 May, David Weller, managing director of award winning state and independent education caterers Alliance in Partnership (AiP), comments on why sandwiches have always been a firm favourite in schools.

With the right combination of good quality bread and lean fillings, often with a salad accompaniment, the humble sandwich is a ready-made all round winner for taste, convenience and nutrition. A healthy serving offers a good balance of nutrients including carbohydrates and proteins, a choice of bread or rolls of brown or wholemeal adds to the variety.

All of our sandwiches, rolls and wraps are prepared and made fresh every day, and kept refrigerated to maintain optimum nutritional value.  Top of the popularity list is Coronation chicken, with ham salad and cheese not far behind.   We are always mindful of the Government Food Standards requirements, and make sure that spreads and mayonnaises used in our sandwiches are low fat.

We are also aware of the environmental impact of the packaging.  With our “grab and go” sandwiches, rolls and wraps we use biodegradable packaging throughout our range.

We will be promoting British Sandwich Week throughout all of our schools, with eye-catching displays and healthy-filling promotions at the POS counter, and promoting the nutritional benefits of sandwiches and wraps.

The key to a successful sandwich lies with the quality of produce and freshness.  Long gone are the days of the motorway service station cardboard sandwich – consumers, regardless of age, now want the variety of ready-made sandwiches to match the ever-changing more exotic palette.  This applies to children as well as adults.

Caterers have to educate parents and carers that value for money nutritious meals can be provided for their children, costing no more than a packed lunch.
