Abstract
Swedish baker Almondy is urging caterers to ‘follow the frog’ and start thinking about Rainforest Alliance Week, taking place from 16th – 22nd Sept.

Earlier this year the Almondy’s Daim cake – which also has gluten-free status and Halal certification – switched the cocoa used for its milk chocolate and caramel topping to cocoa from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms.

By carrying the green frog seal, Almondy Tårta with Daim enables caterers to provide their customers with the popular dessert whilst making menus that little bit more sustainable and profitable.

“In fact” says Andrew Ely, managing director of Almondy, “Some 96% of people are willing to pay extra for a product they perceive as ethical† so updating to Almondy could really boost profits!”

Ely adds: “Despite consumers tightening their purse strings in some areas, the ethical market is making steady growth. The fact is, buying sustainable products such as Rainforest Alliance is an easy way for people to do their bit and these green attitudes are increasingly impacting on catering businesses that need to ensure their offering meet these demands.”

Launched to promote the Alliances’ 25 years of efforts to bring responsibly produced goods and services to a global marketplace, the third Rainforest Alliance Week is fast approaching and operators are being encouraged to plan early in order to make the most of it. Events, promotions and marketing will allow companies to show their support, as well as showcase sustainable credentials, increase consumer awareness, grow customer bases and above all drive food and drink sales.

Ely concludes: “Sustainability is an important issue for our industry but balancing it with products that sell can be a challenge. Coffee and cake is an affordable treat for many people when out-of-home, and so something as simple as a promotion can be very effective in encouraging customers to trade up and try something new as they look to support the week – and long term help businesses get repeat custom. Marketing is essential though – so shout about what you are doing in the build up!”
