Abstract
According to Baker Street research a third of Brits are scared of a specific food with 55% of these people avoiding having the item in their house.

The top five foods that people have a phobia of are: mayonnaise, cold meat, mushrooms, milk and yoghurt. Those with food fears are more likely to be put off by a foods texture or smell rather than the taste of it.

The Baker Street research also found:

  • 29% of people in Belfast are scared of mushrooms
  • Aberystwyth has the highest percentage of people with food phobias at 43%
  • The most fearless eaters live in Worcester- where 88% have no food phobias
  • 46% of people in Oxford are scared of cold meat
  • 45% of people in York have a phobia of bananas

According to the research nearly half of the people surveyed disliked soggy foods including bread, crisps and cereal with a quarter of adults eating food as quickly as they can to avoid ‘the sog’.
