Abstract
The Bramley Apple Campaign organisers are looking for a celebration dish that champions British produce to honour the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June 2012.
In the Bramley Diamond Dishes competition chefs and consumers will be encouraged to be creative with Bramley apples and develop a special dish to reflect this momentous occasion. The winning recipe will celebrate British tradition and heritage using the iconic British Bramley apple to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. Entrants have until midnight on January 16 2012 to upload their recipes on to the Bramley Apple Facebook page, which will then be judged by a panel of food experts. These include renowned culinary champion Prue Leith as well as representatives from the Craft Guild of Chefs, English Apples & Pears and leading supermarket chain Sainsbury's. Seven regional winning recipes will be selected to go forward to the public vote on the Bramley Facebook page during Bramley Apple Week, which runs from February 5-12. Regional winners will receive a limited edition Bramley Diamond Dish, with the overall winner achieving the accolade of their dish being developed and going on sale exclusively in Sainsbury's stores in time for the Jubilee celebrations, as well as winning a £500 cash prize. "I spend my life telling people – children, amateurs, chefs, caterers, anyone who will listen – that good food and cooking are about pleasure," said Leith. "I also spend a lot of time banging on about fresh British ingredients and judging the best menus by the best chefs in the country. "So I am delighted to judge this competition, which brings together the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and that most British of classic ingredients, the Bramley apple. I hope the competition inspires a fresh look at the potential of such an iconic British ingredient. There's a lot more to the Bramley than apple sauce." Adrian Barlow, chief executive of English Apples & Pears, said: "The Bramley Diamond Dishes competition celebrates British heritage by combining an historic event with an iconic British product. We will be driving interest in the campaign through a targeted PR campaign, which will increase awareness and sales of Bramley throughout the jubilee period." The winning dish will go on sale exclusively in Sainsbury's stores in time for the central weekend of Jubilee festivities. • To upload recipes, visit the Bramley Apple Facebook Entry Page – www.facebook.com/bramleyapple
