Culinary expert reveals 4 hacks to rescue kitchen staples
Abstract
To help us reduce the amount of food people are wasting Mimi Morley, senior recipe development manager at HelloFresh, has revealed ways to breathe new life into common ingredients that are nearing their expiration date.

A recent study conducted by sustainability charity WRAP has revealed the average UK household is wasting between £700 and £1,000 of edible food on an annual basis. The hacks include:

  • Eggs: Before you toss an egg past its recommended best before date, Morely suggests the water test.
  • Bread: Bread is one of the most wasted foods, with many of us struggling to get through an entire loaf before its use-by date.
  • Tomatoes: Wrinkly skin doesn't mean a tomato has lost its soul.
  • Onions: If your onions have started to sprout, they are still perfectly edible, just remove the green shoots.

Morley said: "We want to empower home cooks to be more confident in the kitchen. Understanding that an ingredient's 'best before' date is often a guide rather than a hard rule can save families money and significantly impact our environmental footprint."
