Fiona Hopkinson from Talkington Bates abseils Lancaster London hotel for charity

28th Jun 2012 - 00:00
Abstract
Fiona Hopkinson from contract caterer Talkington Bates recently abseiled the 18-story Lancaster London hotel along with 70 other volunteers, raising a total of £15,757 for The Springboard Charity.
Each participant raised money for the Springboard Charity, which helps young people achieve their career potential, and unemployed and disadvantaged people overcome barriers to gaining sustainable employment within the wide variety of opportunities in the hospitality, tourism and leisure industry. The funds raised from this activity will go towards the "Summer School Programme", which supports young people leaving school or college who are uncertain what to do next, with their first step into the world of work. It involves a three week training programme consisting of short certificated courses, pre-employment training, careers advice, structured work experience and mentoring with a view to achieving employment or an apprenticeship as the outcome. She commented on the experience: "Being totally scared of heights, this was a huge personal challenge for me, but I am so glad I overcame my fear and helped raise funds for such an important cause. "With youth unemployment reaching such high numbers, we need to do everything we can to help young people find a suitable job with real prospects – our industry does that and The Springboard Charity matches young people to the right kind of opportunities from them following their preparation on Summer School."
