Food preparation in the classroom

4th Jul 2008 - 00:00
Abstract
The Food Standard Agency (FSA) has published a statement on the handling, preparation and serving of food in school classrooms.
Staff should be undertaking appropriate risk assessments to ensure food can be prepared and provided safely. On a practical level, understanding and ensuring the basic principles of food and personal hygiene should be observed during any class activity. Anyone undertaking food handling and preparation in the classroom should also be seeking information about any children with food allergies or food intolerances. The basic principles of food preparation and personal hygiene should always be observed. These are summarised in the 4C's – cleaning, cooking, chilling, and cross contamination. Some schools and local authorities may prefer their staff to have attended a formal training course. But the necessary skills can be obtained in other ways such as on the job training, self study or relevant prior experience. For more information log onto www.food.gov.uk
