Abstract
After a busy week, settle down with a nice cuppa and enjoy this week's round up of Fun Friday Food facts!
  • You can now buy an apple that doesn’t brown when sliced. Released in 2016 the Arctic Apple is the first genetically engineered fruit to be sold in the US. Browning occurs when a particular protein is exposed to oxygen. However, the fruit has been engineered to switch of that gene and prevent browning and the deterioration of taste. The team behind the development say this is just the beginning.
  • KFC Japan launched a unique competition this week - offering 100 winners the chance to win an exclusive 'chicken smelling bath bomb' in the shape of a drumstick
  • A slice of lemon was first served with fish during the Middle Ages because it was thought the juice from the lemon would dissolve any bones that were accidentally swallowed.
  • It's very likely that you eat seaweed on a regular basis without even knowing it. Alginate, carrageenan and agar  are extracted from seaweed and used in a variety of food products for many different purposes. Seaweed keeps ice cream smooth and creamy by preventing ice crystals from forming when freezing and slows down the speed at which ice cream melts
  • Japan, it seems, has taken a particular liking to Nestlé's chocolate-covered finger biscuits with over 200 different flavours of Kit Kat being released there since the year 2000. Some strange flavours include cucumber, ginger ale, soy sauce, wasabi and lemon vinegar.
  • In 2016, thieves stole £20,000 worth of Jammie Dodger biscuits from its factory in South Wales. After being sentenced to a total of more than 11 years, the five men shouted “Anyone want a biscuit?” as they were taken to the cells.
