Abstract
From tiramisu to Champagne and hummus, we hope you enjoy this week's selection of Fun Friday Food Facts!
  • Consumption of too much salt can be deadly – you need to take about 1 gram of salt per kilogram of weight to die and this was used as a method of ritual suicide in China – especially among the nobility as salt was so expensive
  • Tiramisu means ‘pick me up' in Italian
  • In the unlikely event you have some Champagne left after opening a bottle, try rinsing your hair with it to perk up your highlights
  • A little pearl of wisdom for you. Although vinegar is a much lauded cleaning agent, don’t use it on your jewellery - or at least that containing pearls. Vinegar can dissolve pearls due to the pearl being primarily made of calcium carbonate
  • Britain is the hummus capital of Europe, eating 12,000 tonnes of the stuff each year! Since Waitrose began selling the dip in the 1980’s - the first UK supermarket to do so – it has grown to become a £70 million industry
  • The cost of booze and cigarettes have risen by 169% since 1997! That’s more than three times the rate of inflation. To put it into perspective, the average price of a pint of beer has risen from £1.84 in 1997 to £3.61 in 2017
