Abstract
How could we end National Pie Week without some yummy pie-related Food Facts?
  • The Guinness World Record for the most expensive meat pie ever sold goes to the Fence Gate Inn in Lancashire which sold its pie for £8195 - or £1024 a slice - to eight guests on November 14, 2005. It was made from £500 worth of Japanese wagyu beef fillet, Chinese matsutake mushrooms (which are so precious, they're harvested under guard), Winter Black truffles, French Bluefoot mushrooms (sold at £200 for 1kg), gravy made from two bottles of vintage 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild wine, topped with edible gold leaf
  • National League Division 2 football side Forest Green Rovers only sells vegan pies to fans in the stadium because millionaire owner Dale Vince, himself, shuns all animal-based products
  • Pie might be a British staple but have you ever wondered which kind us Brits like the most? Data this week revealed that the humble Shepherd’s Pie in fact receives the most Google searches - a staggering 90,500 each month! Followed by Cottage pie (74k) then fish pie (49.5k)
  • Rhubarb - a vegetable so celebrated for its role in pastries that it's also known as a "pie plant” - has a kick to it. While rhubarb has a medicinal history originating in Asia, ingesting a large amount of the leaves can cause severe poisoning.
  • When a dessert pie is served with ice cream, as it often is, it's actually called “pie à la mode”
