Fun Friday Food Facts 2019 vol. 24
Abstract
To end the week, here is another great edition of Fun Friday Food Facts!
  • Black soldier flies are the future if scientists are to be believed – their larvae can be baked into bread and biscuits, dried for pet food, used in place of fishmeal in the diet of farmed fish and animals, and they can digest human waste without generating a lot of greenhouse gases.
  • German chocolate cake is not actually German; it was named after its creator Samuel German who was an American.
  • Kiviaq is a Greenland delicacy made by stuffing hundreds of dead birds (Auks) into a seal’s skin where it is sewn up and left for a few months. They are then removed and eaten at special events like birthdays and weddings.
  • In 2001 there were more than 300 banana related accidents in Britain- mostly people slipping on the skins.
  • Green/yellow/red peppers are all unique plants with their own seeds (some people wrongly believe the peppers are different degrees of ripeness of the same plant).
