Abstract
To celebrate the end of Veganuary we have chosen some vegan food facts.
  • Definitely not on your Veganuary menu – and probably not at any other time of year – is casu marzu, the Sardinian ‘rotten cheese’ that contains live maggots.
  • Despite veganism growing in popularity there were 78,900 cows, sheep and pigs killed everyday on average in 2019. This was an increase from 74,800 a day in 2017, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
  • Celebrities who are vegan include Beyoncé, Venus Williams and Zac Efron.
  • Greggs staff received a £300 bonus each after the success of the vegan sausage roll.
  • According to the Vegan Society 2% of the world’s population now identifies as being vegan.
  • A dairy farm with 2,500 cows produces the same amount of waste as a city of around 411,000 people.
