Welcome to our very festive edition of Fun Friday Food Facts! All of this week's facts are Christmas themed and 'yule' never believe some of them.

There are more than 9,000 ways to cook a sprout. Some examples: Dijon-braised, balsamic-roasted, cherry-glazed, sweet and sour ... and Brussels-sprout-with-grapes bake.

He will be a many miles away from his home but British astronaut Tim Peake has revealed that he will be celebrating Christmas Day in space with a traditional pudding, making him the first Brit to eat a Christmas pudding in zero gravity.

Prior to the turkey tradition Christmas fare included roast swan, pheasants and peacocks. A special treat was a roast boars head decorated with holly and fruit.

Burger King restaurants, in 2010, offered a special Christmas burger – the “SPROUT SURPRISE WHOPPER” a standard Burger King Whopper with extra....Brussels sprouts. Strangely this has not been “repeated” in subsequent years....

In Puerto Rico they reckon the way to stave off a hangover from festive over-indulgence is to wipe a slice of lemon or lime under the armpit of your drinking arm. They claim it helps you stay hydrated!

If you despise brussels sprouts, you're not being a fussy eater because according to scientists some of us were born to hate the festive brussels. The gene, carried by 70% of us, make the brain detect sharp, bitter flavours and that's what makes us shun the green veg when eating our Christmas dinner.

Did you know that the tradition of giving chocolate gold coins is inspired by St Nicholas himself who gave bags of gold coins to the poor.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge reportedly ate Brussels sprouts on their honeymoon in the Seychelles – the vegetable is supposedly an aid to fertility because it is so high in folic acid.

You can actually eat your Christmas tree! The pine needles are a great source of vitamin C and can make the perfect marinade for fish. In fact in 2012, a London restaurant was offering a Christmas tree menu for £150 a head! I’ll stick to my £20 artificial one from Argos though!
