Abstract
As we approach round two of rugby union's annual Six Nations tournament we have found our favourite facts from the competing nations.
  • Wales: Traditional Welsh recipes include cawl, bara birth, laverbread, Glamorgan sausage and Welsh rarebit.
  • Scotland: Haggis is not only the national dish of Scotland, but a source of sporting greatness for the country as it holds the Guinness world record for ‘haggis hurling’ – 217ft (66.1m) at the 2011 Milngavie Highland Games.
  • France: France is the biggest importer of frogs legs in the world – bringing in 4,000 tonnes of them from Indonesia every year for the nation’s dinner plates.
  • Ireland: Since 1760, Guinness has been brewed at the same brewery, St. James Gate in Dublin, to which the Guinness Company pays 45 pounds in rent each month. Arthur Guinness, the founder of the Guinness brewery, signed a lease for 9,000 years.
  • Italy: The original margherita pizza colours match with the Italian flag: tomatoes for red, basil for green and mozzarella for white.
  • England: Like marathon runners before a race, England rugby winger Johnny May says he has a ‘big portion of lasagna’ the night before a game to load his body with carbohydrates.
