HC-One reveals 6 finalists for Chef of the Year competition
Abstract
HC-One has named the six contestants who will progress to the grand final of its inaugural Chef of the Year competition following a live cook-off held on 18th June at Printworks Campus, Leeds City College.

Twelve semi-finalists from across the country competed in this second stage of the competition, showcasing their skills, creativity and passion for delivering exceptional dining experiences in care settings. Each chef brought creativity and skill to both their main and texture-modified plates.

Each chef prepared dishes live before a panel of expert judges, including HC-One’s executive chef Chris Bonner, head of catering and housekeeping support services Mark Meacham and Justin Clarke, business development chef at Middleton Foods.

The chefs were supported in the run-up to the semi-final by HC-One’s Group development chefs who provided mentorship to help refine their dishes and techniques.

During the semi-final, participants were assessed on key criteria such as nutritional value, presentation, creativity, taste and suitability for residents’ diverse dietary needs, including Level 5 Minced and Moist (IDDSI) meals. Sustainability, waste reduction, hydration, wellbeing, and hygiene were also evaluated.

The six finalists chosen to advance to the final on 23rd July 2025 at The Grand in York are:

  • Duane Brown, head chef at Bradley Hall Care Home, Midlands
  • Roy Simpson, head chef at Balfarg Care Home, Scotland
  • Mark Evans, chef manager at Augustus Court Care Home, North East
  • Sean Hampson, chef at Rosebridge Court Care Home, North West
  • Philip Greenwood, chef manager at Elstree Court Care Home, South
  • Beata Matusiak, chef at Harley Grange Care Home, Midlands

Mark Meacham, head of catering and housekeeping support services at HC-One, commented: “Congratulations to our shortlisted finalists who have demonstrated exceptional talent in their culinary craft, standing out amongst numerous entries from across the organisation.

“They will now progress to the next stage of the competition. We extend our warmest congratulations to all six finalists and thank every chef who has participated. We look forward to an exciting next phase and wish all contestants the very best of luck.”

The winner will receive a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ culinary trip to a secret destination, renowned for its rich food heritage and scenery.
