Abstract
McDonald’s restaurant manager, Murat Ocalan, has paid a visit to Park Farm in Chichester to check up on the lettuce harvest being prepped for the biggest catering operation in the world.

This summer Ocalan will be responsible for running McDonald’s flagship restaurant on the Olympic Park - one of four restaurants expected to serve an estimated 1.75 million meals in 29 days to park visitors.

With just a few days to go until the start of the Games, the McDonald’s supply chain is busy harvesting and making the final checks to the British ingredients that will be served.

The lettuce is supplied by Natures Way Foods and in 2011 McDonald’s used 15 million heads of lettuce for its menu. During Games time, around 60,000 lettuce heads will be delivered to the four restaurants at the Olympic Park.

Manager Ocalan, said he’s thrilled to have such a key role at the Games Park: “It’s so exciting that the Games are nearly here and in less than a weeks time I will be managing the busiest McDonald’s restaurant in the world.

“It’s a nerve-wracking time for us all as we prepare to serve thousands of the spectators, athletes and team officials who will be visiting the Games this summer. But it’s just as exciting a time for our suppliers who will be providing all the fresh, quality ingredients me and my team will be serving up. I’ve seen for myself some of the great work which is going on behind the scenes to make sure we will meet the huge catering challenge ahead of us.”

The unpredictable British weather is another factor weighing on the minds of those working in McDonald’s supply chain.

As Michele Banik-Rake, head of Agriculture and Olympic Games Supply Chain at McDonald’s UK explained: “In partnership with our longstanding British supply chain we’ve spent three years planning for what we hope will be an Olympic catering success during the four weeks of the Games. Having had one of the wettest summers on record to date, we’re obviously hoping that the weather is going to be in our favour to ensure our lettuce is on champion form for Games time.”
