Abstract
Henry Dimbleby, the independent lead for the Government’s National Food Strategy, heads a high-profile list of speakers lined up for a conference to discuss what a food policy for England ‘should look like’.

Taking place in central London on July 7th, he will be joined by Stefano Agostini, chief executive of Nestlé UK & Ireland; Minette Batters, president of the National Farmers Union, and Sue Davies, head of consumer protection and food policy for Which?

Other speakers include Professor Tim Lang, professor of food policy at City University of London; Tanya Steele, chief executive of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF); Alison Tedstone, national director of diet, nutrition and obesity with Public Health England; and Ian Wright, chief executive of the Food and Drink Federation.

The seminar is timed to follow the publication of Dimbleby’s interim national food strategy report in March and ahead of the publication of the final strategy expected in the autumn.

“Our scope is intentionally broad. We have been asked to set out what needs to be done - across all departments of government and in society more broadly - to build a robust food system that provides good affordable food to everyone; restores the environment; maintains our countryside; brings good jobs to our communities - rural and urban; and stops making us sick,” says Dimbleby.

The conference agenda will preview progress on the strategy, examine questions such as ‘what makes a good food system?’, and look at issues such as maintaining a competitive and secure food manufacturing industry; agricultural standards; improving healthy choices within the food industry; and working with the natural environment to deliver a sustainable strategy.
