Abstract
A study has discovered that fat can clog cells that the body uses to destroy cancerous tissue, making obesity, besides smoking, the biggest preventable cause of cancer in the UK.

Once clogged by fat, the cells stop working and therefore are unable to fight the cancerous cells.

Scientists from Trinity College Dublin published the results in Nature Immunology.

They hope that it will lead to drug treatments that could restore the ‘natural killer’ cells’ fighting abilities.

But it said that the best way of keeping the cells working would be to keep healthy and prevent obesity.

The best ways to reduce cancer risk are:

  • Keep a healthy weight
  • Stop smoking
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Cut back on alcohol
  • Avoid sunburn
