Abstract
Simon Hulstone, chef owner of The Elephant Restaurant, Torquay, and part of the English National Culinary Team, scooped gold at the Culinary World Cup in Luxembourg (22-24 November).
Next stop for the Michelin-starred chef is 'the big one': he heads Team UK at the Bocuse d'Or in Lyon in January 2011. The Bocuse d'Or is one of the world's most prestigious cooking competitions, often referred to as the culinary equivalent of the Olympics. The UK's Bocuse challenge is supported by CESA, the Catering Equipment Suppliers Association. At the CESA Conference at Celtic Manor, November 11-12, delegates raised over £17,000 at an auction to help fund the Team's participation – having eaten the same menu that went on to win Gold at Luxembourg. "It's great that Simon is getting the winning habit!" said Mick Shaddock, chair of CESA. "The Luxembourg win is a fantastic achievement for the team – though no surprise for those of us lucky enough to have enjoyed the meal at the CESA conference." Judges at Luxembourg praised the English chefs' teamwork, commenting on their "great menu, great food [and] great presentation."
