Somerset caterers get funding for healthier kid’s menus

6th Nov 2009 - 00:00
Abstract
A total of 50 Somerset businesses that sell food and drink for children will be offered the chance to give their menus a complete Jamie Oliver-style makeover.
South Somerset District Council has been awarded £10,000 from the Food Standards Agency. The search will now begin for willing businesses, with all five district councils across Somerset working together to identify popular premises and especially put forward those in busy leisure or holiday settings. In a project that will run until late 2010, staff from participating restaurants will be given free nutrition and healthier catering seminars, one-on-one coaching, in-house visits and practical advice to suggest inexpensive but effective changes to their children's menus. Alasdair Bell, Project Leader and South Somerset District Council Deputy Head of Environmental Health and Community Protection said: "What we will be offering to caterers is a combination of training and one-to-one work directly in their premises. "This will give them the inspiration and know-how needed to provide healthier children's menus."
