Abstract
Having launched in the UK five years ago, food-waste fighting app Too Good To Go has hit a landmark milestone of saving five million ‘magic bags’ of surplus food from going to waste.

To date the surplus food app has saved 12.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions from going to waste in the UK. This is equal to the same CO2 emissions needed to power 2,461 around the world flights or 76 years of continuous hot showers. Food waste accounts for more than 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Too Good To Go allows consumers to purchase surplus food from businesses at cheaper prices to prevent it from going to waste. Consumers need to download the app and search for nearby businesses with unsold food, then collect their ‘magic bag’ of food at an allotted time.

The app now has 5.7 million registered users and over 12,800 businesses signed up to fight food waste.

Too Good To Go’s co-founder, Jamie Crummie, commented: “I’m delighted to have hit this amazing milestone of five million ‘magic bags’ saved just as we reach our fifth birthday here in the UK. It’s been incredible to see Too Good To Go grow in its presence and impact since 2016.

“Globally, a third of all food produced goes to waste and so there is still much more we can do. By making small and simple changes in our life - from the way we cook and use ingredients at home, to the way we do our food shop - we can all help pave the way for a brighter and greener future.”
