2011 is the year of 'adding value' for restaurateurs, says iknow-uk

19th Jan 2011 - 00:00
Abstract
Hospitality businesses could increase their profits by up to 10% simply by working smarter in 2011, advises Marcus Simmons, managing director of iknow-uk.
Simmons is advising hospitality businesses to look at ways they can work more closely together - and is predicting a real difference to their bottom line could be achieved if they do so. He said: "2010 was a difficult year – we all know that. But it seems that many of our customers who own pubs, restaurants, hotels or B&Bs have decided to respond to the current situation and work together to find a mutually beneficial solution. "We've heard of lots of examples where local businesses are joining together to offer customers that little something extra that sets them apart from the competition – so B&Bs teeming with restaurants in their area, for example, to offer a great value deal for residents, or hoteliers working with attractions to drive customers to both parties. "The feedback is that it really does work. We've had lots of reports of customers who have seen a real difference to their bottom line by simple team work – and holidaymakers are appreciating the added value and returning again and again." One B&B listing on iknow-uk's regional websites is Low Penhowe in Malton, North Yorkshire. Owner Christopher Turner and his wife Philippa have taken the 'adding value' approach to help drive business to their luxury holiday property. Turner explained: "Every small business owner knows that they need to make their company stand out from the crowd if they are to attract customers at this difficult economic time. "I'm a real believer in playing a part in the local community – taking things into our own hands to ensure our visitors have the best possible stay. After all, that's what makes them come back to us time and time again. "People coming to stay at Low Penhowe for the first time are often new to the area, and it's important to me that I can give them an all round service in terms of making recommendations on where they can go and what they can do whilst they are here. "We work closely with local pubs in the area and recommend their various menus to our customers. We also negotiate exclusive deals with some of the landlords – for example, our visitors can currently get a great deal at a local pub, the Bay Horse in Burythorpe, Malton, where they can get two outstanding meals for just £10. "These are phenomenal deals, and by being able to offer that little something extra, we're making a little step that makes a big difference to both of our businesses." Simmons added: "I really do believe that 2011 is the year that businesses can work together to add value to their customers and make a real impact on their bottom line. It sounds simple but the customers we've spoken to who have made a concerted effort to do so have noticed a real difference." iknow-uk helps hospitality businesses work together with its local guide feature.
