Abstract
Environmental charity Hubbub has launched the #PlasticPioneers campaign to encourage schools to stop using single-use plastics.

The average Brit currently throws away 34kg of plastic packaging ever year, which is the equivalent weight of 5,000 pencils.

Eight out of ten Brits are actively trying to reduce the amount of plastic they throw away, according to Hubbub research.

Twelve Schools are taking steps to encourage over 7,000 students to rethink school life with less plastic, by creating a pupil-led action plan of their own. These can include steps to switch to reusable water bottles or creating reusable party kits for school events.

The campaign has received help from eco-artists, plastic workshops and inspirational speakers.

Here are ten tips to help reduce single-use plastics in schools:

  • Make reusable water bottles part of school culture
  • Find refill points
  • Stop use of plastic straws and dessert pots
  • Switch to metal cutlery
  • Switch to reusable sandwich wraps, tin foil or reusable containers
  • Use mugs at meetings or parent events instead of disposable coffee cups
  • Use notebooks with reusable plastic covers or use brown paper to wrap them
  • Crate a reusable party kit
  • Invite plastic reduction experts to school
  • Create your own Plastic Pioneer committee
