Abstract
Christmas is now well and truly upon us so sit back and relax, and enjoy the last round of Fun Friday Food Facts for 2017!
  • The Sami people from northern Scandinavia traditionally fed magic mushrooms to their reindeer and then collected their urine to drink. The digestive system of the reindeer removes the toxins but leaves the hallucinogenic components of the mushrooms
  • It’s technically illegal to eat mince pies on Christmas Day in England. In the 17th century, Oliver Cromwell banned Christmas pudding, mince pies and anything to do with gluttony. Interestingly enough the law has never been rescinded
  • According to a study, the average Brit is expected to consume 6,000 calories on Christmas Day (starting with a bottle of bubbly at brekky!) - 3x a woman’s daily recommended amount and the equivalent of 118 chicken nuggets or 26 doughnuts
  • Japanese people traditionally eat at KFC for Christmas dinner, thanks to a successful marketing campaign 40 years ago. KFC is so popular that customers must place their Christmas orders 2 months in advance
  • M&Ms were created so that military soldiers could enjoy heat resistant and easy to transport chocolate during World War II – making for a sweet Christmas present for those on the frontline
