Abstract
Celebrate the end of the week with a break and some good ole Friday Food Facts.
  • McDonald’s was the first fast food chain to introduce a breakfast option on their menu. The first thing they put on their menu was the egg mcMuffin back in 1972
  • Food waste is a serious issue that we should all help fight this Stop Food Waste Day (today). To put it into perspective - 200 million people could be fed with the food wasted in Europe alone each year; 24m slices of bread are thrown away every day in the UK; and 6m potatoes!
  • The oldest evidence for soup is from 6,000 B.C. and used hippopotamus and sparrow meat
  • Bouquets typically last only a few days, but you can make them last a day or two longer by sprinkling 1 teaspoon of baking soda and a pinch of salt into the vase when filling it with water. The mixture feeds the flowers, keeping them fresh for longer
  • The sweetest substance currently known is thaumatin, which comes from the katemfe fruit in Africa. It is used as a low-calorie sweetener and is rated at 100,000 times as sweet as regular white sugar
