To celebrate National Dumpling Day (26th September) here are six facts about Dumplings, which are savory pockets of dough filled with various ingredients.
  • According to China's Ministry of Commerce, over three billion dumplings are consumed during Chinese New Year alone.
  • The annual Dumpling Festival in Richmond, British Columbia (Canada) draws more than 40,000 visitors each year.
  • According to a survey, pierogi (Polish dumplings) are the number one most recognised and consumed traditional dish in the country.
  • The largest dumpling ever made was created in China and holds the Guinness World Record for the heaviest dumpling. It was created in 2014 by a large culinary team led by Wang Hongwei and it weighed 798 kilograms whilst being over three metres in diameter.
  • The UK has seen a 35% increase in dumpling sales in grocery chains like Tesco and Sainsbury’s since 2020.
  • Historical records from the Eastern Han Dynasty (circa 200 CE) credit Chinese physician Zhang Zhongjing with inventing dumplings as a medicinal food to help villagers combat frostbite, using lamb, herbs, and dough to warm the body.
